Traffic deaths decline nationally

Last year traffic deaths fell to 41,059, the lowest since 1994. The fatality rate-1.37 deaths per 100 million miles-was the lowest ever, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

Here in Wisconsin where I live and most of its neighboring states didn't do as well as the rest of the country at reducing traffic fatalities. Traffic deaths rose in this region. There were 756 fatalities in Wisconsin last year, 32 more than the previous year. In Minnesota, there were 10 more fatalities in 2007 than 2006; in Iowa six more, Michigan two more, Illinois was the exception in the Upper Midwest. Traffic deaths there declined by five to 1,249.

Another conspicuous exception to the nationwide fall in traffic deaths was motorcyclists. Last year, 5,154 motorcyclists died, up from 6.6 percent from a year earlier. Motorcyclists now account for 13 percent of all crash fatalities.According to a calculation by the New York Times, motorcyle deaths aer up 128 percent from their 1997 low.

Although Wisconsin didn't follow the national trend of declining traffic fatalties last year, this year looks different. For the first four months of the year, traffic deaths were down 29 percent, and May this year saw the fewest traffic fatalties for that month in more than 60 years.

Bad weather in the winter and high fuel prices have prompted people to drive less. That's certainly one reason for the decline.

But a decline in driving isn't the explanation for the national decline in traffic deaths. People didn't start actually driving less in response to higher fuel prices until November last year. In Wisconsin, traffic has declined about 4 percent, but traffic fatalities have declined much more than that.

Every traffic death is a tragedy. I'ts good that the highways are getting safer, but there are still far too many people injured or killed in traffic accidents.

What can you do about it? Drive safer, wear your seatbelt and drive sober.
