Smoke in our eyes and lungs Remember The Platters? They had some great hits, one being "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." Like myself, many of you have the melody and lyrics tucked away in your memory bank. That song was popular in 1958 when lots of smoke got in our eyes, whether from factories, leaf burning, the diferent moded of gasoline fed transportation, or cigarettes. Little did we know that smoke was doing more than getting in our eyes. When it came to cigarettes, some of our Mothers and Fathers didn't know, and by the time they finally did, it was too late, their habit having harnessed them with emphysema and the need to be tethered to an oxygen machine. Fletcher Knebel presented a thought provoking statement when he said, "it's been proven beyond a doubt that smoking is one of the leading causes of statistics--cigarette smoking is a hazard to the user's health. What we've only recently become aware of, thanks to conclusive scientific evidence, is the harmful effect that secondhand smoke has on the health of innocent bystanders.
